Is Seeing a Dietitian Worth It?

Written by Emily Lovell, RD

If you have ever searched for nutrition information and guidance online, you know how confusing it can be, and oftentimes contradictory. One blog tells you carbs are the enemy, another says you should be adding more carbs; some share the importance of fibre, while others are pushing the carnivore diet.

With so much information and misinformation reaching us it can be challenging to know what to believe. You may be wondering, is it worth seeing a dietitian to support you and help you navigate what is best for you?

In most cases, the answer is yes—and here’s why.

1. Personalized Support

The dietitians on our team at The Nourish Collective do not give you a one-size-fits-all plan. They get to know you as a whole person, including your past history with food, medical history and where you’d like to go in the future to create a road map of support that truly is a fit for you. This level of support and personalization recognizes your unique situation and set of circumstances, ensuring the guidance you receive is tailored to your specific needs.

2. Evidence-Based Information

Unlike influencers or fad-diet promoters, dietitians are bound to ethics and evidenced based information from a regulatory body. Our work is grounded in proven strategies that support long term health rather than quick fixes. We pull from many frameworks in our work with clients including Intuitive Eating, Health at Every Size® and Neurodiversity Affirming Model®.

3. Knowledge of Medical Conditions

If you’re living with conditions like diabetes, high cholesterol, digestive issues, or other unexplained symptoms, as dietitians, we have knowledge to support these conditions from a weight-inclusive and anti-diet approach. Nourishment can play a role in managing and sometimes improving medical conditions.

4. A Better Relationship With Food

At TNC our role as dietitians is to help our clients find a way of eating that feels supportive mentally, emotionally and physically. We are not the food police, and do not tell our clients “what to eat, and what not to eat”. We are there to guide you in reconnecting to your body, empower you to make food choices that feel supportive and rebuild a positive, joyful relationship with food.

5. Not Just Nutrition Information

When working with one of our dietitians, it is not just about nutrition education, information and counselling.  Our dietitians engage in continuing education that not only keeps them up to date regarding the most recent evidence-based practice but also creating a safe, comfortable space to share your experience.  This includes training in trauma-informed care, and the ethics of practicing through an inclusive lens.  Our dietitians also recognize the importance of caring for ourselves so that we can care for our clients.  The ability to show up for our clients in our most regulated, calm and caring state means that we invest in our own well-being through nourishment, therapy, play, movement or rest – we walk the walk.

You are worthy of support

Working with one of our dietitians is an investment in your long-term well-being. If you’re looking for personalized support and wanting to improve your relationship with food, partnering with a dietitian can create more ease in that journey, and be far more impactful.
