Your Food Relationship is About More Than Just Food

Have you ever found yourself on the crest of starting another diet and a strong sense of dread comes over you? Have you felt apprehensive about accepting dinner invitations for fear you won’t be able to eat what is being served? Have you ever felt like you don’t know what foods to eat anymore? Have you worried about what your children’s experience will be like with food?

You are not alone. These experiences are becoming more and more common because we live in a culture obsessed with dieting and changing the way we eat for any number of reasons. Each one of us has our own personal experience with diet culture. It may be the feeling that you must lose weight, or it could be that your health will improve if you eliminate certain food groups, or it could be that you must earn your food through vigorous exercise…just to name a few.

Take a moment and consider how your experience with diet culture directly impacts your quality of life. The World Health Organization defines quality of life ‘as an individual's perception of their position in life in the context of the culture and value systems in which they live and in relation to their goals, expectations, standards, and concerns’, or as we often discuss with our clients your values.

Does your experience with diet culture interfere with your ability to live within your values?

If so, you are not alone. AND, there is a way to get closer to living within your values, closer to living at ease and peace with food.

All of us at The Nourish Collective share a common intention– to help folks find their way back to having a peaceful relationship with food and living a full and joyful life. One that doesn’t leave you:

  • Feeling guilt or shame after eating

  • Preoccupied with food for most of your day

  • Disconnected from your body

  • Stuck in making food choices based on the external messaging you are receiving

Instead, we support our clients in healing their relationship with food and improving their quality of life. While there are different approaches that inform our practice, including Intuitive Eating, we welcome our clients to integrate different aspects of healing that honour their lived experience and help them reconnect with what truly matters to them.

Each dietitian on The Nourish Collective team has had their own personal and professional journey into providing weight-inclusive and fat-positive care. We are here because we believe in the power and ability of reconnecting with your values and reclaiming your relationship with food.

To help you reconnect with your values, consider these prompts:

  • List what is most important to you in your life. Be as specific as possible.

  • How has your past/current relationship with food impacted your ability to live within your values?

  • What shifts can you make to closer align with what matters most to you?
